The biorefinery is set in a rural area one hundred km from Budapest. The nearest town, Dunaföldvár, is 5 km from the plant - an area dominated by family farming. Pannonia Bio benefits farmers by purchasing local crops directly and bringing greater stability to the Hungarian maize market.

The biorefinery has impacted positively on community life in the area. These impacts include the creation of high quality, permanent jobs; reduction in outmigration, lower unemployment, improved public services and better employee compensation packages. The plant has improved the financial position of Dunaföldvár, securing a sizeable financial surplus for the town.

A socio economic study (click to read) of the impacts of the plant concluded: ‘Few industries are capable of providing an attractive future in rural environments whilst contributing to climate change mitigation and energy dependence. Biorefineries play a crucial role in advancing farming in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, contributing to the convergence of regions, a core objective of the European project’.
